My neighbours son has got a serious hair loss problem. He`s just 22 and been loosing his hair badly. I advised him to stop washing his hair with shampoo as it contains Sodium Lauryl Sulfate, which damages hair folicles. Since he stopped using shampoo about a year ago, theres been a big improvement in gaining back some hair loss on his crown. Theres one major problem, he uses hairspray and gels on a daily basis, this is causing heavy hair loss at the front. Is there any solid advice that can be found, perhaps visiting a Trichologists ? Psychologists ?? Heres a link www.trichologists.org.uk/trichMapAny other pointers? Thanks H2d G2M

Haha Sounds like somebody I know. Welcome H2d G2M, It is great that your friend has gone on the no shampoo method and seen some great results. Although I highly recommend some more sacrifice be made in order to save his hair. Hairspray is simply more harmful chemical that he is adding to the mix and the effect's are actually amplified by him going on no-poo.Water is simply not enough to get hairspray out of hair (at least not in one wash) believe me I've tried. Hairspray will mix with all the dust and sweat creating a sticky mess when you make it wet also this will essentially suffocate it from receiving it's needed nutrients .This doesn't mean he should go back to shampooing again but you must tell him that in order to gain the full benefits of no-poo he is gonna have to go the full transition and at the moment he is stuck in a dangerous cycle which will also potentially kill his hair. Good luck making him see the light otherwise you may be seeing it reflecting off smooth waxed head one day.
Ps Love the name

Hairspray Is a definite no no for me. I try and go for water based products if I really must style my hair.

Some people use so much of the stuff I'm amazed there hasn't been a rise in spontanious combustion.

Perhaps it might come in handy when your looking for him. Just follow his scent.

Its 5 months on since my neighbours son stopped using shampoo, as advised. Just a warm water wash, no more chemical bubbly stuff, the results are amazing, the small balding patches have now dissapeared, his hairline is much stronger. The big problem now is getting him to stop the hair gelling, can you advise on water based products, non harmful, or is it a `no no` for all sticky hair stuff.

Could be worth a good way to tidy things up a bit. some research must be done though into the chemicals as I'm sure he doesn't wan't the rest of it's hair to fall out too. Think I'll make a thread on it.

Ok, so we are 2 years on, my dear neighbour is completly bald now, the chemicals from the gels and hairspray killed the folicles. He`s still only 24 but wont take advice on healthy eating and never to put chemicals on his head again, its a long road back now, I dont see it happening unless theres gene a therapy revolution...
